Niche blogging is an impeccable way to make money online. Well, almost. It has its quirks, but overall, it is how I have made a living online thus far in my internet marketing career.

I used to have some major qualms with making niche blogs to make money because my mind would literally go into niche overload (the equivalent of information overload) and I would end up getting absolutely nothing accomplished. I assume I am not the only one who has had this problem, so let me elaborate:

As I would be researching potential niches, my mind would begin to wander to all the different hundreds or thousands of niches I could possibly pursue. Instead of intently focusing on 1 to start with, I’d try to go after 4 or 5 at the same time! I would never get any good content or backlink articles written for any of them because I was too busy balancing them and switching my thoughts between the group. I was trying to conquer the world, so to speak, and in the end I didn’t conquer anything except myself.

It was when I began to focus only on 1 niche at a time that I found success (money). In the game of making money online, it is very true that you can become your biggest obstacle – not your competitors. If you are “all over the place” then you aren’t going to make any money.

Here is what you do:

1. You start by doing keyword research on 1 particular thing that you think would be a happy medium between a good amount of SERP traffic and manageable competition. If your plan is to use Adsense, then obviously you have to consider the CPC. If you purchased my make money online ebook then use the guidelines I suggest there. If you are a member of The Keyword Academy then use Court’s and Mark’s suggestions. Either way will get the job done.

2. After making a list of all the keywords you want to go after for that niche, stick with them. Don’t go off course by diverting your attention to other potential niches. If you think of another niche blog idea, write it down and put it away until you are done with this current project.

3. Read up on your niche so that you have the background knowledge necessary to write about it. Depending on what the niche is, it could be a good idea to spend a week or so reading about it. If it is a niche that requires some specialized knowledge then this preliminary research stage is even more necessary. If you are preparing for a “stupid sells” niche as I discussed on my make money with Adsense blog, then you won’t need to spend as much time on the research. Remember, you are focusing on this one niche for now, so get absorbed in learning about it for the time being. Get to the point where you know what you are talking about. For the good niches where a good amount of money is involved, the “fake it until you make it” strategy will sink you like an anchor.

If your niche is in the spotlight, you need to have some thoughtful on-page content. Content is king, remember? On the surface, pretend like you agree. In the MMO community, we all know backlinks are king, but act like you don’t know this if anyone asks you.

Also, with absolute crap content, you run the risk of getting penalized by Google or reported by some a–hole who thinks you are being unethical. Google is on to the crap content strategy now and it is not advised to continue with it.

4. It is a must to become a content-producing machine with all original content if you want to get natural backlinks. Most of your content will be for your backlinks (articles, blog posts, etc) – and you are going to need a lot of it if your niche is fairly competitive. I will be elaborating on this and offering some helpful tips on backlink content creation in a future article.
